5 European Destinations to Visit Once You’re Fully Vaccinated

Any frequent traveler has been itching to plan their next trip since vaccinations became available. Many European countries have opened their borders to international travel, making this a great time to explore more of Europe.

These 5 European destinations are perfect to visit once you’re fully vaccinated, as they are open to most travelers and a vaccination card can save you time and testing, giving you more opportunity to enjoy the trip. Before booking any international travel, be sure to check the up to date CDC guidelines on international travel and COVID-19, as well as with the Department of State if you are in the U.S.

1: France

When travelers are choosing a European destination to visit for their next trip, many think of France. It has a whimsical representation, immediately conjuring ideas of coffee and pastry at an outdoor cafe, strolling along the water, visiting the Eiffel Tower, and taking in the sights. After a long year, France may be on many traveling bucket lists, and now visitors can travel to France after being fully vaccinated. Many popular tourist locations in France are scheduled to reopen in July of 2021.

As of June 9, France is open to U.S. travel as long as they provide a negative PCR test for COVID-19 within 72 hours of entry. To travel from the U.S. to France, travelers that are fully vaccinated can provide their proof of vaccination along with a sworn statement that they do not have COVID symptoms nor have they come into contact with an individual infected with COVID.

2: Denmark

A charming European destination that may be on a more experienced traveler’s bucket list is Denmark. The geography, landscapes, and smaller town setting makes this a highly sought after and unique trip, perfect for slowing down and connecting with nature in a slower paced setting.

Denmark has been accepting foreign travelers since June 5, with either proof of being fully vaccinated or with a negative COVID-19 before entry into the country. To travel from the U.S. to Denmark, it is required that vaccinated individuals provide specific information to support their vaccinated status, and unvaccinated individuals must meet specific requirements to enter the country. The government website provides in depth information about what is required and how to proceed before travel.

3: Greece

Another popular European destination to visit is Greece, known for its picturesque architecture, brilliant blue waters, and mediterranean cuisine. Greece is a common tourist destination for those new to European travel as well as for seasoned travelers, as your visit can be as in depth or as luxurious as you’d like.

Greece is one of the European countries that opened to the U.S. a bit earlier, around the middle of May, which is when restaurants and museums began to open as well. To travel from the U.S. to Greece, all travelers must have proof of being fully vaccinated, have proof of antibodies, or a negative PCR test within 72 hours of their arrival. The guidelines and travel requirements in Greece do change as the COVID infection rate changes, so be sure to check for updates closer to your travel date.

4: Iceland

Iceland is the perfect European destination for connecting with nature and getting out of your regular routine. The land of “fire and ice”, known for volcanoes and glaciers, offers a balance of tourist destinations like Blue Lagoon and local small town experiences. This is a great place to adventure and plan a more natural vacation.

Since March 17, Iceland has been open to travelers, with a range of guidelines depending on your vaccination and exposure status. To travel from the U.S. to Iceland, all visitors must provide contact information including name and address, as well as vaccination status. Fully vaccinated individuals do not have to be tested or be quarantined at the border, but do need to provide proof of vaccination. Unvaccinated individuals must be tested at the border and quarantine until their results are received. A negative COVID test before traveling may be accepted. Check with up to date regulations in Iceland before traveling to ensure you have proper documentation.

5: Italy

Italy is a must visit European destination, from the food to the location and just the overall experience. Over the last year, many travelers may have connected with travel shows and food they could cook at home to fulfill some of the travel bug feelings, so getting to visit Italy after learning about the destination is the perfect first trip after vaccination.

Italy was a country that was highlighted through the pandemic, with the easing of lockdown restrictions starting in April and slowly allowing travel. To travel from the U.S, to Italy visitors may choose to book a COVID-free flight, which is a direct flight from a main airport hub to Italy, which will allow you to skip the quarantine for 10 days on arrival. Otherwise a negative PCR test result is required before entry. Regulations in Italy may change as the year progresses.

European travel is always a fun trip to plan, as many countries are easy to navigate as an English speaking person, are familiar with tourist seasons, and offer a range of activities from adventure to leisure and everything in between. Popular spots like Italy  and France are now open to U.S. travel as well as unique destinations like Denmark and Iceland. With the proper documentation, now is the time to get back to traveling.
